Amazon TOM Team Requirements
The requirements for Amazon's Transportation Associate role are refreshingly straightforward — no degree, no CDL, no driving experience. But there are a few hard gates that will disqualify you, and knowing them before you apply saves you a wasted application. Here's the complete checklist.
The short version: You must be 21+, hold a valid driver's license, pass a DOT physical and drug screening, and clear a background check. No CDL, no degree, no experience required.
The hard requirements
- Age 21 or older. Non-negotiable — it's tied to commercial vehicle regulations.
- Valid driver's license. A regular license is fine; it does not need to be commercial.
- DOT physical exam. A certified medical examiner checks vision, hearing, blood pressure, and overall fitness to operate commercial vehicles. Valid for up to 2 years.
- Drug screening — and ongoing testing. Pre-employment screening plus random drug testing throughout employment. This is a DOT-regulated safety role; the testing doesn't stop after hire.
- Background check. Amazon screens criminal history. Disqualifying offenses aren't published, but anything involving driving or safety will get scrutiny.
- English literacy for safety procedures. You must be able to read, understand, and follow safety guidelines and operating procedures in English — this is a stated requirement on postings.
The physical demands
This isn't a desk job. Expect:
- Working outdoors in all weather — heat, cold, rain, snow. The yard doesn't close.
- Climbing in and out of truck cabs repeatedly throughout a shift.
- Walking the yard for audits and trailer checks — it's a lot of steps.
- Coupling and uncoupling trailers — cranking landing gear and pulling fifth-wheel releases takes real upper-body effort.
- Night, weekend, and holiday shifts — the yard runs around the clock, and new hires often start on less popular shifts.
Preferred qualifications (not required)
Postings list these as nice-to-haves that strengthen your application:
- Class A CDL — helps you stand out but is explicitly preferred, not required.
- Microsoft Office familiarity — yard coordination involves tablets, logs, and communication tools.
- Strong communication skills — you'll coordinate with dock workers, drivers, and operations teams all day.
- Prior warehouse or logistics experience — current Amazon associates have a natural edge here.
What will disqualify you
- Under 21 — no exceptions
- Suspended or invalid driver's license
- Failing the drug screening
- Unable to pass the DOT physical
- Disqualifying criminal history
How to get ready before you apply
- Get your DOT physical done early. It costs $75–$150 and takes under an hour — having it ready speeds everything up.
- Clean up your driving record. Unpaid tickets and suspensions will surface; handle them first.
- Be honest on the application. The background check will find what the application doesn't mention.
- Get comfortable outdoors. If you've only worked inside the FC, spend some time being honest with yourself about all-weather yard work.
